Common Causes of Nosebleeds

Nosebleeds can occur for many reasons, including:

  • Dry air can dry out the nasal membranes
  • Seasonal allergies or sinus infections
  • Nose picking or frequent rubbing
  • Minor injuries to the nose
  • High blood pressure or certain medications, such as blood thinners

Understanding the cause can help prevent future episodes.

First Aid for a Nosebleed

If you experience a nosebleed, follow these steps:

1. Stay Calm and Sit Upright

Lean forward slightly to prevent blood from flowing down the throat, which can cause coughing or stomach irritation.

2. Pinch the Soft Part of Your Nose

Use your thumb and index finger to firmly pinch the soft part of your nose, just below the bony bridge. Maintain steady pressure for at least 10–15 minutes without checking early.

3. Breathe Through Your Mouth

This helps you stay comfortable while the bleeding stops.

4. Apply a Cold Compress

Place a cold pack or ice wrapped in a cloth on the bridge of the nose to help constrict blood vessels.

What to Avoid During a Nosebleed

To prevent aggravating the bleeding:

  • Do not tilt your head back.
  • Avoid blowing your nose immediately afterward.
  • Refrain from inserting tissues or other objects into your nose.

When to See a Doctor

Seek medical attention if:

  • The bleeding lasts more than 20 minutes despite proper pressure.
  • Nosebleeds occur frequently.
  • The bleeding is heavy or follows a head injury.
  • You have underlying health conditions that may complicate healing.

Preventing Future Nosebleeds

To reduce the risk of nosebleeds:

  • Use a humidifier during dry seasons.
  • Apply a thin layer of saline gel or spray inside the nostrils.
  • Avoid picking or rubbing your nose.
  • Manage allergies with guidance from a healthcare provider.
