What Is Balloon Sinuplasty?

Balloon Sinuplasty is a procedure designed to open blocked sinus passages and improve drainage. It is FDA-approved and commonly recommended for individuals who suffer from chronic sinusitis and haven’t responded well to other treatments.

During the procedure, a small, flexible balloon catheter is inserted into the sinus opening. Once in position, the balloon is gently inflated to expand the sinus passage. This process helps widen the drainage pathway without removing bone or tissue. After dilation, the balloon is deflated and removed, leaving the newly opened sinus passage intact.

What to Expect During the Procedure

Balloon Sinuplasty is typically performed in-office under local anesthesia. Patients remain awake and comfortable throughout the procedure, which typically takes less than an hour. There’s no need for incisions or general anesthesia, making it a lower-risk option for many.

Most patients return home the same day. Mild pressure or congestion may be felt immediately afterward, but significant pain is uncommon.

Recovery After Balloon Sinuplasty

One of the biggest advantages is the relatively fast recovery. Most people can return to work and normal activities within 1–2 days. It’s advised to avoid strenuous exercise and heavy lifting for a few days after the procedure.

Some nasal discharge, congestion, or minor bleeding is normal in the first week. Patients may be instructed to use a saline spray or rinse to maintain sinus drainage during the healing process. Follow-up visits ensure that healing is progressing appropriately and that symptoms have improved.

When to Consider Balloon Sinuplasty

Balloon Sinuplasty is ideal for patients with chronic or recurrent sinus infections, nasal congestion, and facial pain due to sinus blockage. If medication and other treatments haven’t worked, this procedure could be a suitable alternative. Contact us if you would like to schedule a consultation.
