Signs It’s Time to Visit an ENT for Persistent Congestion

March 19, 2026 ·

Breathing through your nose should feel effortless. When it doesn’t, every part of your day can feel harder than it needs to be. Persistent nasal congestion is more than a minor annoyance or a lingering stuffy nose. It can interfere with sleep, affect your ability to focus, reduce your sense of smell, and leave you feeling constantly fatigued. In Colorado Springs, ongoing nasal congestion is especially common due to our dry climate, high altitude, and seasonal allergens. If your symptoms have been dragging on for weeks or months, it may be time to look beyond temporary fixes and understand what is really causing the problem.

Signs It’s Time to Visit an ENT for Persistent Congestion

What is Persistent congestion?

At Colorado ENT & Allergy, persistent nasal congestion refers to a stuffiness, blockage, or swelling of the nasal passages that persists for several weeks or months and affects your breathing. This is different from the temporary congestion you experience with a cold. It does not typically resolve on its own.

Common causes of persistent congestion in Colorado Springs include:

  • Allergies to pollen or dust
  • Chronic sinusitis
  • A deviated septum
  • Nasal polyps
  • Low humidity and high altitude

When congestion continues beyond a typical illness, an underlying condition is often responsible.

When to visit an ENT for Persistent congestion?

1. If you have been congested for more than 2 weeks and have not found relief with over-the-counter medications, you should make an appointment with an ENT.

2. Have had 3 or more sinus infections in 1 year, or if you consistently have trouble breathing through your nose, which affects your sleep or daily functioning.

3. Consistently have pain or pressure in your face, particularly in the area around your eyes, cheeks, and forehead.

4. Have lost your sense of smell or taste for an extended period of time.

If you recognize any of these symptoms, a comprehensive ENT evaluation can help determine the cause and appropriate treatment.

How does Colorado Springs affect your sinuses?

The Colorado Springs climate affects your sinuses and allergies. The high altitude and dry air can dry out your nasal mucus, making your nose more inflamed, irritated, and more likely to become infected and congested. In addition, local allergens such as mountain cedar, pine, and grass pollen can trigger or exacerbate allergic rhinitis and acute sinusitis, with the thinner, drier air and higher concentration of local allergens, your sinus symptoms may be more severe or last longer than they would in other areas, so it’s important to have your symptoms evaluated and managed by an expert.

What will happen at my initial visit?

When you come to see us, we will work together to figure out what is causing your persistent congestion. The appointment will include a detailed conversation about your symptoms, how long you’ve had them, your medical history, and whether you’ve tried any treatments. We may also perform a painless in-office procedure called a nasal endoscopy to look inside your nasal passages. We will use a small flexible scope with a camera on the end to look for blockages, inflammation, or growths. Depending on the results of your endoscopy, we may order a CT scan to examine your sinuses, or we may perform allergy testing to identify what in your environment is making you feel unwell. With this information, we can develop a treatment plan that is tailored to your needs.

Preventing Persistent Congestion

Ideally, you want to be proactive and take some steps to avoid congestion in Colorado Springs.

Here are some helpful hints:

  • It is important to humidify your home, particularly the bedroom at night, to maintain moisture in the nose.
  • Adequate hydration is also important for thinning mucus. A saline rinse or spray should be used daily to clear the sinuses of allergens, mucus, and other irritants.
  • A HEPA filter is also recommended to reduce dust, pollen, and other local allergens in your home.

This will help create a cleaner environment for your respiratory system and reduce chronic inflammation and congestion.

Final Thoughts

Persistent congestion is not something you need to accept as part of life in Colorado Springs. Ongoing nasal blockage, facial pressure, or difficulty breathing often signals a treatable condition. Schedule an appointment with Colorado ENT & Allergy to prevent complications and improve your overall quality of life.
