For many, tonsil removal seems like something that only happens in childhood. However, adults can also experience conditions that may require a tonsillectomy. Chronic infections, sleep disturbances, and other complications can signal it’s time to consider this common procedure.

Diagnosis: Tonsillitis and Adenoiditis on the green sheet: Signs You May Need a Tonsillectomy As an Adult

Here’s what to watch for and when to talk to your doctor

Frequent or Chronic Tonsillitis

If you’ve had several episodes of tonsillitis in a year, it may be time to consider surgery. Recurring sore throats, swollen glands, and fever are often signs that your tonsils are becoming a long-term problem rather than a temporary infection.

Trouble Breathing or Swallowing

Enlarged tonsils can obstruct your airway, making it harder to breathe at night. This is especially common in adults who snore or wake up gasping for air. If your tonsils are causing sleep apnea or discomfort while eating, removing them could provide long-term relief.

Persistent Bad Breath

Tonsils can develop small pockets that trap food particles, bacteria, and debris, forming tonsil stones. These can lead to persistent halitosis despite good oral hygiene. If this becomes a regular issue, a tonsillectomy may be the solution.

Ongoing Ear Pain

Although tonsils and ears are not directly connected, inflammation in the throat can cause referred pain in the ears. If you experience repeated or lingering earaches without an ear infection, your tonsils could be the culprit.

Abscess Formation

A peritonsillar abscess is a painful condition where pus collects around the tonsils. This often follows a severe case of tonsillitis and may require drainage or hospitalization. If it happens more than once, doctors may recommend removing your tonsils.

When to See a Specialist

If you’re dealing with any of these issues repeatedly or they’re affecting your daily life, it’s time to see an ENT specialist. They can assess your symptoms and recommend whether a tonsillectomy is appropriate. Schedule a consultation to learn more.
